Wilmington, Ohio Wesleyan battle to 1-1 tie WC now 7-0-1

Wilmington and Ohio Wesleyan battled to a 1-1 tie in non-conference soccer action Wednesday night at Charlie Gilhart Field. Wilmington, which entered the match ranked No. 17 in the NSCAA poll, is now 7-0-1 while OWU heads back to Delaware with a 3-2-2 record. “We knew it was going to be a tough match,” Wilmington head coach Steve Spirk said. “They have a quality team and they play a tough schedule like we do. I don’t think that we played particularly well in the first half, but still came away with a lead off a nice corner kick.” Wilmington took the lead in the 32nd minute when freshman Katie Skaleski (Beavercreek) fired a header past OWU keeper Ali Gary (1) off a Kristen Elam (Cincinnati/Northwest) corner kick. Both teams had good looks at goal in the second half, but nobody hit netting until Wesleyan’s Allie Cozzone (18) ripped a sliding volley into the WC goal in the 80th minute. “At halftime, we talked about stepping up our game and doing some things better, which I thought we did,” Spirk said. “I felt we had a lot more dangerous chances than they did, but we just didn’t put them away.” Wilmington had more of the play in the overtime periods, but 20 extra minutes failed to produce a game-winning goal. For the match, Ohio Wesleyan had 17 shots to Wilmington’s 14. Wilmington keeper Casey McKinney (Grove City/Bishop Ready) went 110 minutes and recorded seven saves.
