Sept. 5, 2007 By Zach Stipe

From the Ohio Northern University Website:

ADA — Sophomore Angie Pisut recorded her first career hat trick to lead the Ohio Northern women’s soccer team to a 6-3 home-opening victory over Ohio Wesleyan on Wednesday at the ONU Soccer Field. The Polar Bears improve to 2-1 with the victory, while the Battling Bishops drop to 1-1-1. Pisut scored from 15 yards out off a through ball from sophomore Jamie Eiben to give Northern a 1-0 advantage at the 6:14 mark in the first half.

The Bishops tied the game at 22:41 after ONU senior goalie Barbie Krieger made a diving stop of a shot , but deflected it right to OWU’s Meredith Gerrick (19), who easily slipped the ball into the net. Senior Laura Childerson came off the bench for the Polar Bears and sparked two goals late in the first half to give ONU a 3-1 lead. Childerson scored from six yards out off an assist from junior Emily Davies at 36:15. Less than three minutes later Childerson’s deflected shot served as an assist for freshman Natalie White’s first collegiate goal. Pisut gave ONU a commanding 4-1 lead after halftime when she scored on a cross from sophomore Kaitlyn Sanders.

OWU’s Allie Cozzone (18) scored from six yards out off a pass from Chelsea Keller to make the score 4-2 at 61:21. Michelle Corbett brought the Bishops within one goal at 70:59 by scoring off a cross from Gerrick.  ONU senior Erin Stapp answered right back by scoring a goal off junior Kristin Reininger’s deflected shot to give ONU a 5-3 lead at 74:25. Less than three minutes later, Pisut headed in her third goal of the game off a cross from Sanders.

Pisut is the 17th ONU women’s soccer player to record a hat trick. Overall, the three-goal feat has been accomplished 34 times Lady Polar Bear history.

ONU held a 16-6 advantage on shots on goal and a 6-5 edge on corner kicks. Krieger had three saves, while Alie Gary recorded six saves and Laura VanHoey made three saves for the Bishops. “It was a good win over a good team,” said head coach Mark Batman. “We still have some things to improve on, but you have to be happy anytime you score six goals.” The Polar Bears host Denison next Wednesday at the ONU Soccer Field in Ada.
