Women's Soccer Ties Virginia Wesleyan (OWU Sports Information Department)

Ohio Wesleyan 1, Virginia Wesleyan 1
Sept. 2, 2007
Senior forward Meredith Gerrick (19 - Durham, N.C./Indianapolis (Ind.) North Central) scored to give Ohio Wesleyan a 1-0 lead, but Virginia Wesleyan came back to tie the game and the teams battled through a pair of scoreless overtimes in a 1-1 deadlock in the championship game of the Orthopaedic Associates of Virginia Classic, hosted by Virginia Wesleyan on Sunday in Virginia Beach, Va.
The Battling Bishops broke a scoreless tie in the 71st minute when junior midfielder Emily Steger (6 - Palm Harbor, Fla./East Lake) passed the ball to Gerrick, whose shot from 5 yards out found the back of the Marlin net. Virginia Wesleyan, an NCAA Division III semifinalist in 2006, got the tying goal just over 5 minutes later as Rachel Bowker sent the ball in to Nikki Mazzoccone, who headed it home from 15 yards.
The Marlins out shot the Bishops, 6-1, during the 2 overtime periods, but senior goalkeeper Ali Gary (1 - Gahanna/Lincoln) kept the game alive by making 4 saves during the extra sessions. Virginia Wesleyan out shot Ohio Wesleyan, 21-11. Gary finished with 12 saves, while Marlin keeper Lindsey Williams was credited with 6 saves.
In Sunday's consolation game, Eastern (Pa.) defeated Meredith (N.C.) by a score of 9-1.
