DELAWARE, Ohio — Saturday was a historic day for the Earlham College women’s soccer team as the Quakers claimed their 11th victory of the season with a 1-0 win over Ohio Wesleyan University.

First-year Karman Duchon (Decatur, GA/Decatur) provided the offense with a breakaway goal 43 seconds into the North Coast Athletic Conference match as the Quakers tied the school record for wins in a season. Earlham’s 1999 squad also won 11 matches.

With the victory, the Quakers are 11-2-1 overall and 3-1 in the NCAC. Earlham has won four in a row and nine of the last 10. The win also moves the Quakers into third place in the conference trailing Ohio Wesleyan (8-4-3, 3-1-1) and No. 17 Wittenberg University (12-2-1, 3-0-1). The top four teams in the standings qualify for the NCAC tournament.

Duchon’s goal was her 11th this season. Sophomore Callie Thompson (Louisville, KY/Dupont Manual) also has 11 goals for the Quakers as the duo leads the team in that category.
First-year goalkeeper Megan Holthaus (Harrison, OH/McAuley) had five saves for the Quakers.
Ohio Wesleyan had an advantage in shots at 22-4, while holding a 7-0 edge in corner kicks. Earlham faces Wittenberg Tuesday on Matlack Field. The NCAC match starts at 4:30 p.m.

Bishops Fall to Quakers
Earlham Edges Women's Soccer....The Quakers scored in the first minute and held on to escape with an NCAC win on Saturday (OWU Sports Information)

Earlham 1, Ohio Wesleyan 0

Oct. 13, 2007
Karman Duchon scored on a breakaway in the first minute of play and the Earlham defense made the lead stand as the Quakers escaped with a North Coast Athletic Conference win over Ohio Wesleyan on Saturday at Roy Rike Field. Duchon won the ball in the midfield and took off for the Ohio Wesleyan goal, then got a shot past Bishop keeper Ali Gary (1 - Gahanna/Lincoln) 43 seconds into the game. The Quaker defense made enough timely plays to preserve the lead through the remaining 89-plus minutes of action.

Ohio Wesleyan's first dangerous chance to score in the first half came in the 14th minute. After a Bishop restart, senior defender Lindsey Macklin (14 - Columbus/Bexley) had a shot blocked by the Earlham defense, and junior forward Michelle Corbett (4 - Dublin/Scioto) got to the rebound first but had her shot saved by Earlham keeper Megan Holthaus.

Later in the half, Corbett dished off to senior midfielder Meg Smith (2 - Portage, Mich./Northern), took the return pass and got an open look at the Quaker goal, but Holthaus was there again for the save.

The Bishops kept up the offensive pressure in the second half. Midway through the period, junior forward Allie Cozzone (18 - Chagrin Falls/Kenston) had 3 straight shots after an Ohio Wesleyan corner, but the Quaker defense blocked two and the third sailed wide.

Smith nearly tied the game in the 72nd minute, sending the ball right to the goal mouth with Corbett angling in to play a possible rebound, but the Quaker defense cleared the ball off the goal line to preserve the lead.

Senior forward Meredith Gerrick (19 - Durham, N.C./Indianapolis (Ind.) North Central) had a header off a restart saved in the 86th minute, and Macklin's header off a restart in the 89th minute was the Bishops' last chance.

Ohio Wesleyan outshot Earlham, 22-4. Freshman Laura VanHoey (31 - Rochester, Mich.) made 2 saves while blanking the Quakers over the final 89 minutes. Holthaus finished with 5 saves in the Quaker goal.
