Eagles fall 2-0 to Ohio Wesleyan
The Eastern University Women’s Soccer team had no shortage of chances in their season opener against Ohio Wesleyan, but the Eagles were unable to find the net in a 2-0 loss. The Battling Bishops scored once in each half to secure the win.
For the match the Eagles recorded 18 shots to the Bishops six, but Ohio Wesleyan made their chances count. From the start the Eagles were able to generate scoring chances. The Bishops scored against the run of play in the
19th minute, Ohio Wesleyan’s returning All-American Michelle Corbett (4) picked up a loose ball at the top of the box and fired a shot into the upper left hand corner.
The Eagles had chances to draw level in the first half and several great opportunities in the opening minutes of the second, but time and again saw balls roll just wide or were denied by Ohio Wesleyan’s keeper. Nicole Grindle fired a shot off the post midway through the second frame. The Bishop’s Allie Cozzone added the second goal of the match in the 67th minute of the match on a shot from the right flank. Coach Mouw said of his team’s effort. “I felt we were able create chances to win the match, but we will need to continue to improve our execution in the attacking end. Ohio Wesleyan is a program that has great tradition of winning soccer, and they have a good squad that took advantage of their chances. We hope to continue to grow and get better each day.” The Eagles return to action tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 against Meredith College from North Carolina.

Corbett, Cozzone Lead Women's Soccer In Season Opener (OWU Sports Information Dept.)

Junior forward Michelle Corbett (Dublin/Scioto) and junior forward Allie Cozzone
(18 - Chagrin Falls/Kenston) scored goals to lead Ohio Wesleyan past Eastern in the first round of the Orthopaedic Associates of Virginia Classic, hosted by Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday in Virginia Beach, Va.
The win moves Ohio Wesleyan into Sunday's tournament championship game, where the Battling Bishops will take on Virginia Wesleyan, a 3-0 winner over Meredith (N.C.) in Saturday's other first-round match up.
Corbett gave the Bishops a 1-0 lead when she pounced on a loose ball and buried a shot from the right side in the 18th minute. Cozzone added an insurance goal in the 67th minute, blistering a shot off the hip of Eastern keeper Amanda Daveler and into the net.
Eastern out shot Ohio Wesleyan, 18-6. Senior goalkeeper Ali Gary (1 - Gahanna/Lincoln) had 7 saves in completing the shutout. Daveler finished with 2 saves for Eastern.
In Saturday's second game, Virginia Wesleyan jumped to a 2-0 halftime lead and went on to defeat Meredith.Sunday's championship game will mark the first-ever meeting between Virginia Wesleyan and Ohio Wesleyan in women's soccer.
