Ohio Wesleyan Women Look to Defend Div. Title, Record Winning Streak By DENNY BURKHOLDER - NCAAsports.com Staff (August, 2003) Ohio Wesleyan University women’s soccer is the real deal. The Battling Bishops are, by all accounts, the team to beat in Div. III. With all the attention, their biggest challenge this season might be the task of diverting attention to their opponents. Coach Bob Barnes is not taking the competition lighty. “It will be another competitive season trying to go for our third straight national title,” he said. Ohio Wesleyan won their second straight NCAA Division III title in 2002, ending the season with a perfect 25-0 record. Barnes was voted Coach of the Year by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America for the second straight year. The Battling Bishops put the exclamation point on 2002 by marking their 20th shutout of the season with their 1-0 championship victory over Messiah. They extended their Div. III winning streak – already an NCAA record – to 45 games. Going into the 2003 season, Ohio Wesleyan brings a large number of its biggest weapons back for another title run. Senior Erika Howland, the offensive MVP of the Div. III finals in 2002, returns, as does senior Akeya Terrell. Terrell was the defensive MVP of the 2001 finals. Also returning are first team All-American senior Amy Work, second team All-American sophomore Sarah Wall, and senior Liz Sheehan, the overall MVP of the 2002 NCAA tournament. (Left #18 Ohio Wesleyan standout and 2002 Tournament MVP Liz Sheehan). The low turnover doesn’t guarantee another championship, though. “We return the bulk of our team, but will be tested repeatedly throughout the year with the number of quality teams that we play,” Barnes said. Competing for playing time will be newcomers Stefanie Riedeger, Anna Overholt, Taylor Kendall, Julie Steffen, and Jamie Blake. Ohio Wesleyan women’s soccer begins the 2003 season on Aug. 30 against University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire at Nazareth College.

Ohio Wesleyan University junior Erika Howland (Mariemont/Terrace Park, Ohio) scored the lone goal of the game in the 24th minute to lead the Battling Bishops past Messiah College 1-0 for the team’s second consecutive NCAA Division III Women’s Soccer Championship. Ohio Wesleyan increased its NCAA record winning streak to 45 games, becoming the first team to successfully defend its title since UC San Diego won three in a row in 1995-97. Playing on the AstroTurf field due to poor field conditions both teams had to adjust their play to the much faster paced surface. The Falcons came out strong in the opening minutes attacking on the flanks, but Ohio Wesleyan’s defense absorbed the pressure not allowing Messiah any shots on goal. After the initial minutes of the half the Bishops adjusting to the turf, the Bishops attacked on the flank to force Messiah into giving up a corner kick. Toni Frissora’s (Westerville South/Columbus, Ohio), service was knocked around the box until Liz Sheehan (South/Westerville, Ohio) gathered the ball and passed it to a wide-open Howland on the six-yard box for the only score of the match. The Falcons nearly tied the game in the waning minutes of the second half with a good through ball behind the defense, but OWU keeper Mindy Hammond (St. Francis DeSales/Columbus, Ohio) came off of her line clearing the ball out of the box. That proved to be Messiah’s best chance as it got just three shots off against an Ohio Wesleyan defense that allowed just four goals this season and none in the NCAA Tournament, while the Bishops fired 13 shots. Falcon goalie Maggie Futato (Cumberland Valley/Mechanicsburg, Pa.) went the distance, making eight stops, while Hammond did not register a single save in her 90 minutes of action.
