NCAC Player of the week 9/23/07: September 23, 2007 Freshman forward Karman Duchon (Decatur, GA/Decatur) scored twice and added 3 assists during the week. Ohio Wesleyan senior defender Lindsey Macklin (Columbus, OH/Bexley) scored twice, including the game-winner in the second over time, to lift the Battling Bishops past Mount St. Joseph, 3-2. She converted a Bishop corner kick to tie the game at 1-1 and also converted another corner at the beginning of the second extra session. She then was part of a stifling OWU defense that kept DePauw off the scoreboard for the first 84 minutes of a 3-1 OWU victory. Ohio Wesleyan was 2-0 for the week. --------------------------------------------

NCAC Player of the week 9/2/07: September 4, 2007 Earlham freshman Karman Duchon (Decatur, GA/Decatur) notched four goals in two games to help the Quakers to an unbeaten start. Duchon scored Earlham’s only goal in a 1-1 double-overtime tie against Capital in the season-opener, then followed with three goals in a 5-0 win over Spalding, including two within 27 seconds midway through the second half. ------------------------------------------------
Edited: Sept. 23, 2007 NORTH COAST SEASON OPENS WITH FIVE GAMES THIS WEEK Conference action gets under way this week with five games on the slate, four of them on Saturday. The 2007 campaign kicks off Wednesday when Allegheny (2-4-1) travels to Oberlin (2-4-1). On Saturday, everyone but Hiram (5-3-0) plays an NCAC contest. Wittenberg (7-2-0) and Allegheny welcome Wooster (7-1-0) and Earlham (6-1-1), respectively, while the Yeowomen host Denison (7-2-0) and Kenyon (4-3-1) welcomes Ohio Wesleyan (3-3-1). The remainder of the schedule involves non-conference play. Tuesday, Earlham travels to Manchester and the next day Wooster, Ohio Wesleyan and Wittenberg host John Carroll, Otterbein and Ohio Northern, respectively. Hiram, which does not open conference play until October 3, travels to Thiel on Thursday and hosts Franciscan on Sunday. Polls: In the NSCAA/adidas National Rankings dated Sept. 18, Denison is seventh, up two spots from last week. Wittenberg also received votes. In the Great Lakes region, The Big Red stand first, Wittenberg is fourth, Kenyon is fifth and Ohio Wesleyan is seventh. In the D3Kicks.com Top 25 Rankings, Denison is 11th, up two spots from last week, Kenyon and Wittenberg also received votes. Notes: ALLEGHENY defeated Westminster (1-0) and lost to NYU (2-0) and Otterbein (4-0) last week. In the victory, Katie Murphy (Venetia, PA/Peters Township) scored the goal on a penalty kick 33 minutes into the game. Kelsie Mozzoni (Pittsburgh, PA/Thomas Jefferson) made a season-best eight saves to preserve her second shutout of the year. DENISON defeated Otterbein, 2-1 in overtime, then lost to Carnegie Mellon, 1-0, last week. The loss snapped a six game win streak. Sarah Ash (Cincinnati, OH/Sycamore) scored the overtime game-winner four minutes into the extra session. EARLHAM won twice to improve to 6-1-1. HIRAM went 1-2 last week with the victory coming over Geneva by a 5-2 count. The Terriers lost to Baldwin-Wallace, 3-1, and John Carroll, 5-1. KENYON needed on two goals to go 1-0-1 last week. Sophomore Rachel Goheen (Cincinnati, OH/Anderson) scored the only goal in a 1-0 defeat of Elmhurst. Sophomore Tracey Farris (Louisville, KY/Eastern) scored for the Ladies in a 1-1 double overtime tie with Roanoke. Both of OBERLIN'S contests resulted in 2-0 losses. Goalkeeper Sarah Grabinski (Elmhurst, IL/York) had 10 saves in the two games. Junior forward Allie Cozzone (18 - Chagrin Falls, OH/Kenston) scored in the 80th minute to lift OHIO WESLEYAN to a 1-1 double overtime tie with Wilmington. The Bishops also lost to Messiah last week, 5-0. WITTENBERG posted a pair of 1-0 wins last week over Mt. St. Joseph and Wilmington to improve to 7-2 overall. Senior goalkeeper Abby Brown (Copper Canyon, TX/Marcus) made nine saves as WOOSTER won once and lost once last week. She made five stops in a 1-0 loss to Washington & Jefferson then made four saves in a 3-1 defeat of Case. ------------------------------------------------
Edited: Sept. 16, 2007 NCAC TEAMS ENTER LAST WEEK BEFORE LEAGUE PLAY BEGINS Non-conference games still dominate the schedules of North Coast women's soccer teams as they enter their final week of preparation before the conference schedules begin next week. Games are scheduled for every day of the coming week with the exception of Friday, and each NCAC team will take the field at least twice. Polls: Denison leads a trio of NCAC teams in the NSCAA/adidas National Poll (Sept. 11). The Big Red entered the week in the ninth spot. Wittenberg is tabbed 18th followed by Kenyon in 23rd. The Big Red, Tigers and Ladies are 1-2-3 in the Great Lakes Region poll. Wooster also received votes, but did not crack the top 10 ... Denison is 13th in the D3Kicks.com Top 25 preseason poll. Wittenberg and Kenyon also received votes, but did not make it into the Top 25. The Big Red are first in the Great Lakes Regional rankings, which are compiled by points earned against in-region opponents. Wittenberg (third-tie), Wooster (sixth), Kenyon (16th) and Earlham (20th) all fall into the top 20 in the Great Lakes Region. Ohio Wesleyan is 32nd, Hiram is 39th, Allegheny 41st and Earlham 47th out of 59 teams listed. Notes: ALLEGHENY and Grove City battled to a 0-0 double overtime tie. Freshman Kelsie Mozzoni (Pittsburgh, PA/Thomas Jefferson) stopped five shots. Allegheny out shot Grove City, 22-14 ... DENISON outscored its opponents 12-2 and ran its win streak to five matches. The Big Red defeated Randolph-Macon 8-1, Ohio Northern, 2-1, and Mount Union, 2-0. The last time a Denison team scored eight goals in a single contest was Nov. 1, 2003, in an 8-0 win over Hiram. Sophomore Anna Rusch (Washington, D.C./Sidwell Friends) netted the first Big Red hat trick since Colleen Wirtz scored four times in a victory over Earlham in 2004. Freshmen Jenn Clemmer (Hixson, TN/Baylor School) and Maggie Hoskin (Chicago, IL/Homewood-Flossmoor) are tied for second place on the Denison scoring list, with four goals apiece. Clemmer scored a pair of goals against Randolph-Macon, assisted on one goal versus Ohio Northern and then notched the game-winning goal in the shutout of Mount Union. Hoskin also scored twice last week, finding the back of the net against Randolph-Macon and scoring the second goal of the game against Mount Union. She also posted an assist. Denison hosts Otterbein on Tuesday. The match was supposed to be played at Otterbein, but was moved due to poor field conditions in Westerville ... Junior Maddie Daskovsky (Evanston, IL/Evanston Township) scored three goals, including the game-winner in a 3-2 double overtime win against Anderson, to lead EARLHAM to a 2-1 week. Callie Thompson (Louisville, KY/Dupont Manual) chipped in two goals and an assist as the Quakers also defeated Hanover, 3-0, and fell to DePauw, 3-1 ... HIRAM is off to a 4-1 start after a 2-1 win over Adrian last week. Freshman Courtney Cosley (Crystal Lake, IL/Crystal Lake South) stretched her scoring streak to four games with a goal in the win. She leads the Terriers with five assists. Classmate Claire Conner (Aurora, OH/Aurora) also scored against Adrian, and has now scored in at least once in five straight games – every Hiram game this season ... After earning the first national ranking in the program's history, KENYON dropped a 1-0 overtime decision to Wilmington, then fell 5-0 to top-ranked Wheaton ... OBERLIN went 1-2 last week, downing Buffalo State, 1-0, and falling to Baldwin-Wallace and John Carroll, by identical 1-0 scores. Junior forward Joelle Sesar (Vacaville, CA/Rocklin) scored the Yeowomen's lone goal. She leads the team with three goals this fall ... Wittenberg out shot Transylvania, 8-5, but couldn't find the back of the net ... Senior Kate Kiley (Deham, MA/Noble and Greenough School), a former goalkeeper with WOOSTER, scored the first two goals of her career, including the game-winner in overtime in a 2-1 win over Carnegie Mellon. Her other goal gave the Fighting Scots an insurmountable 3-0 lead in the 81st minute of a 5-1 victory over Alma. The Scots went 2-1 on the week, also falling to Otterbein, 2-1. Allegheny (1-2-0), Earlham (2-0-1), Hiram (3-1-0), Oberlin (1-1-1) and Wooster (4-0-0) entertain Grove City, Anderson, Adrian, Baldwin-Wallace and Otterbein, respectively. Denison (3-1-0) travels to Ohio Northern, Kenyon (2-1-0) heads to Wilmington, and Wittenberg (3-1-0) is at Transylvania. Ohio Wesleyan's (1-2-1) first action of the week is at Mt. St. Joseph on Thursday. The Bishops return home the next day to host DePauw. The Scots travel to Carnegie Mellon Friday, then stay in western Pennsylvania and play at Washington & Jefferson on Saturday. Other games on Saturday are Denison at Mount Union, Hanover at Earlham, Kenyon at Wheaton, Oberlin at John Carroll and Centre at Wittenberg. Allegheny has the final game of the week, scheduled for Sunday when they face NYU at the College of Staten Island. The majority of teams begin North Coast play on Wednesday, Sept. 26. Polls: In the latest Great Lakes regional rankings, compiled by points, Kenyon and Wittenberg are tied for third, while Denison and Wooster are tied for sixth with Kalamazoo and Wilmington. In the national poll, Denison dropped from 17th to 22nd. Notes: ALLEGHENY dropped a 2-0 decision to Centre to fall to 1-2 on the year ... DENISON improved from 22nd to 10th in the latest NSCAA/adidas top 25 poll (Sept. 4). The Big Red upped their season mark to 3-1 with victories over Anderson (6-0) and 13th-ranked Washington & Lee (1-0). Freshman Jennifer Clemmer (Hixson, TN/Baylor School) scored her first collegiate goal in the 47th minute against the Generals and that proved to be all Denison needed. Kenyon played host to the tournament because of poor field conditions at Otterbein. The Ladies finish the tournament today with a contest against Manchester ... In their only action last week, OBERLIN tied Washington & Jefferson, 0-0 in overtime ... OHIO WESLEYAN lost to Ohio Northern (6-3) and Capital (1-0) last week. Three different players scored for the Bishops in the loss to the Polar Bears. The Crusaders scored in the 57th minute to edge the Bishops in their home opener ... With victories over Capital (1-0) and DePauw (3-0), WITTENBERG improved to 3-1 on the year. The Tigers have posted three consecutive shutouts this season, and did not allow 16th- ranked DePauw any shots on goal ... WOOSTER remained unbeaten with a pair of 4-0 victories, over Marietta and Buffalo State. Sophomore Simone DiSalvo (Reynoldsburg, OHReynoldsburg) scored a goal in each game and added an assist. NCAC Women's Soccer Roundup - Sept. 4 WOOSTER TO TEST PERFECT RECORD TWICE THIS WEEK The nine North Coast women's soccer squads can look forward to a full week of non-conference action, beginning today when Wooster (2-0), the only team with a perfect record in the NCAC, travels to Marietta. The Fighting Scots return home to face Buffalo State on Saturday and Alma on Sunday. Earlham (1-0-1) and Ohio Wesleyan (1-0-1) have not lost a game this fall; each opened the 2007 campaign with a win and a tie. The Quakers host Rose-Hulman on Saturday and DePauw on Sunday. The Battling Bishops travel to Ohio Northern on Wednesday and host Capital on Saturday. Every team in the league will step onto the pitch at least twice this week. Tomorrow, Denison (1-1) and Wittenberg (1-1) host Anderson and Capital, respectively, while Oberlin (1-1) travels to Washington & Jefferson. Hiram (1-1) heads to Hilbert on Friday and hosts Tri-State the next day. Wittenberg welcomes DePauw on Saturday; the Tigers follow up with Rose-Hulman on Sunday. OWU then tied Virginia Wesleyan, 1-1, after two overtime sessions. Junior midfielder Emily Steger’s (Palm Harbor, FL/East Lake) goal broke a scoreless tie in the 71st minute. Senior ‘keeper Ali Gary (Gahanna, OH/Lincoln) kept the game alive with four saves in the extra sessions; she finished the game with 12 ... Junior defender Jamie Mack (Rochester, NY/Penfield) scored to lead WITTENBERG past 24th-ranked Ithaca at the Gettysburg College Players Cup. The Tigers dropped their opener to William Smith, 3-1 … WOOSTER is off to a 2-0 start. Senior Laura Ayer (Pittsburgh, PA/Mt. Lebanon), a three-time All-NCAC defender, has made a smooth transition to forward, as she scored three of the Fighting Scots’ five goals last weekend. She had two unassisted tallies in a 3-0 win over Ursuline and then gave Wooster a 2-0 lead in an eventual 2-1 win over Mount Union. --------------------------------------------
